The People's Hall

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage. Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past.

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. The People’s Hall is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to start planning the restoration of this 275 year old Grade II* listed building with the engagement of the Nottingham community.

The People’s Hall – Vision

A dynamic starting point for inclusive heritage and community use

The restoration of The People’s Hall will bring a 275-year-old civic landmark back to life as a centre for creativity, learning and community connection. It will demonstrate how historic buildings can serve the needs of today while securing a future for the wider work of NHBT.

NHBT’s Aims for the People’s Hall

  • Involve local people – especially underrepresented groups – in shaping its future

  • Restore and adapt the Hall with sensitivity to its heritage

  • Generate sustainable income through mixed, appropriate uses

Built in 1750 and expanded in the 1850s into Nottingham’s first School of Design, The People’s Hall has long been a space of collective ingenuity. Our plan is to continue this legacy - reviving the Hall as a “new town hall” of ideas, action, and collaboration.

Over a two-year period of community-powered exploration, we’ll develop the foundations for its long-term future: hosting creative activity, recruiting volunteers, shaping inclusive programmes and governance, and preparing for full restoration.

By growing social capital, local skills and shared ownership, The People’s Hall will become a model for how heritage spaces can support an inclusive economy and stronger communities.
