Record Attendance and New Recruits: People's Hall Heritage Open Days Hailed as a Triumph!
The People's Hall is delighted to announce that its participation in this year's Heritage Open Days initiative was an outstanding success, drawing record crowds and significant interest from new volunteers. The event spanned three key dates—September 13th, 20th, and 21st—offering the community unprecedented access to one of the area's most historic buildings.
Over 400 Visitors Explore Local History
We saw an incredible turnout across the three days, with over 400 people stepping through the doors of the Georgian Hall. This substantial number demonstrates the strong local appetite for celebrating and exploring our shared heritage. Visitors came from all across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and were eager to learn the stories hidden within the Hall's walls.
The Trustees and staff were delighted to see the Hall filled with so many enthusiastic visitors. It reaffirms the importance of preserving this space for future generations.
Deep Dives and Guided Expertise
A core highlight of the weekend was the comprehensive tour programme, run entirely by our committed volunteers. These tours were offered continuously throughout each day, providing detailed insights into two fascinating aspects of the property:
The Historic Caves: Visitors descended into the unique, subterranean network of historic caves beneath the Hall, a feature many locals were unaware of. The caves were built in around 1750 and still show the marks from the tools used to carve them.
The Georgian Architecture: Guided walks around the magnificent Georgian building offered a chance to appreciate its architectural splendour and understand its significance as high status Georgian Townhouse and then its civic importance as 'The Peoples Hall'.
Engaging Talks Spark Conversation
In addition to the tours, we hosted a series of engaging talks presented by distinguished local heritage experts. These sessions attracted a dedicated audience, with approximately 30 people pausing their visits each day to listen intently to our speakers.
Topics covered included the Government School of Design and the History of Design in Nottingham. The talks fostered lively discussion and provided valuable context to the artefacts and architecture on display.
Future Looks Bright with 30 New Volunteer Recruits
The enthusiasm generated by the event translated directly into invaluable support for the Hall's future. We were thrilled to have a total of 30 people register their interest in becoming volunteers!
These new recruits will be essential in helping us with future events at the People's Hall and in assisting our archiving and researching efforts. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who signed up and look forward to working with you.
